The chart is a powerful tool for persuasion precisely because it has an aura of objectivity. I wish I could explain that ideas aren’t out there in the ether, waiting to be found. One column lists a sequence of values in a source unit, such as miles, and the adjacent column provides the precise mathematical equivalent in the target unit, kilometers. The cost of any choice is the value of the best alternative that was not chosen. In his 1786 work, "The Commercial and Political Atlas," he single-handedly invented or popularised three of the four horsemen of the modern chart apocalypse: the line chart, the bar chart, and later, the pie chart. Medical dosages are calculated and administered with exacting care, almost exclusively using metric units like milligrams (mg) and milliliters (mL) to ensure global consistency and safety.
