The physical act of writing on the chart engages the generation effect and haptic memory systems, forging a deeper, more personal connection to the information that viewing a screen cannot replicate. I can design a cleaner navigation menu not because it "looks better," but because I know that reducing the number of choices will make it easier for the user to accomplish their goal. The catalog's purpose was to educate its audience, to make the case for this new and radical aesthetic. What are their goals? What are their pain points? What does a typical day look like for them? Designing for this persona, instead of for yourself, ensures that the solution is relevant and effective. I know I still have a long way to go, but I hope that one day I'll have the skill, the patience, and the clarity of thought to build a system like that for a brand I believe in. Subjective criteria, such as "ease of use" or "design aesthetic," should be clearly identified as such, perhaps using a qualitative rating system rather than a misleadingly precise number.
