The object it was trying to emulate was the hefty, glossy, and deeply magical print catalog, a tome that would arrive with a satisfying thud on the doorstep and promise a world of tangible possibilities. A cream separator, a piece of farm machinery utterly alien to the modern eye, is depicted with callouts and diagrams explaining its function. Learning about the Bauhaus and their mission to unite art and industry gave me a framework for thinking about how to create systems, not just one-off objects. This potential has been realized in a stunningly diverse array of applications, from the organizational printable that structures our daily lives to the educational printable that enriches the minds of children, and now to the revolutionary 3D printable that is changing how we create physical objects. They make it easier to have ideas about how an entire system should behave, rather than just how one screen should look.
