It was a tool designed for creating static images, and so much of early web design looked like a static print layout that had been put online. We are also very good at judging length from a common baseline, which is why a bar chart is a workhorse of data visualization. My job, it seemed, was not to create, but to assemble. A sewing pattern is a classic and essential type of physical template. This new awareness of the human element in data also led me to confront the darker side of the practice: the ethics of visualization.
