An interactive visualization is a fundamentally different kind of idea. It stands as a testament to the idea that sometimes, the most profoundly effective solutions are the ones we can hold in our own hands. This is the magic of what designers call pre-attentive attributes—the visual properties that we can process in a fraction of a second, before we even have time to think. It gave me the idea that a chart could be more than just an efficient conveyor of information; it could be a portrait, a poem, a window into the messy, beautiful reality of a human life.
