The freedom of the blank canvas was what I craved, and the design manual seemed determined to fill that canvas with lines and boxes before I even had a chance to make my first mark. At its essence, drawing in black and white is a study in light and shadow. Modernism gave us the framework for thinking about design as a systematic, problem-solving discipline capable of operating at an industrial scale.
