This surveillance economy is the engine that powers the personalized, algorithmic catalog, a system that knows us so well it can anticipate our desires and subtly nudge our behavior in ways we may not even notice. We are not purely rational beings. Each of these charts serves a specific cognitive purpose, designed to reduce complexity and provide a clear framework for action or understanding. We are culturally conditioned to trust charts, to see them as unmediated representations of fact. When you can do absolutely anything, the sheer number of possibilities is so overwhelming that it’s almost impossible to make a decision.
