The choice of materials in a consumer product can contribute to deforestation, pollution, and climate change. From that day on, my entire approach changed. The price of a smartphone does not include the cost of the toxic e-waste it will become in two years, a cost that is often borne by impoverished communities in other parts of the world who are tasked with the dangerous job of dismantling our digital detritus. A high-contrast scene with stark blacks and brilliant whites communicates drama and intensity, while a low-contrast scene dominated by middle grays evokes a feeling of softness, fog, or tranquility. That disastrous project was the perfect, humbling preamble to our third-year branding module, where our main assignment was to develop a complete brand identity for a fictional company and, to my initial dread, compile it all into a comprehensive design manual. I imagined spending my days arranging beautiful fonts and picking out color palettes, and the end result would be something that people would just inherently recognize as "good design" because it looked cool.
