The hand-drawn, personal visualizations from the "Dear Data" project are beautiful because they are imperfect, because they reveal the hand of the creator, and because they communicate a sense of vulnerability and personal experience that a clean, computer-generated chart might lack. The printable chart is not a monolithic, one-size-fits-all solution but rather a flexible framework for externalizing and structuring thought, which morphs to meet the primary psychological challenge of its user. The very design of the catalog—its order, its clarity, its rejection of ornamentation—was a demonstration of the philosophy embodied in the products it contained. I had decorated the data, not communicated it. Is this idea really solving the core problem, or is it just a cool visual that I'm attached to? Is it feasible to build with the available time and resources? Is it appropriate for the target audience? You have to be willing to be your own harshest critic and, more importantly, you have to be willing to kill your darlings. 31 In more structured therapeutic contexts, a printable chart can be used to track progress through a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) workbook or to practice mindfulness exercises.
