For another project, I was faced with the challenge of showing the flow of energy from different sources (coal, gas, renewables) to different sectors of consumption (residential, industrial, transportation). Understanding how light interacts with objects helps you depict shadows, highlights, and textures accurately. It teaches that a sphere is not rendered with a simple outline, but with a gradual transition of values, from a bright highlight where the light hits directly, through mid-tones, into the core shadow, and finally to the subtle reflected light that bounces back from surrounding surfaces. Each chart builds on the last, constructing a narrative piece by piece. The myth of the lone genius who disappears for a month and emerges with a perfect, fully-formed masterpiece is just that—a myth. These small details make an event feel well-planned.
