How does it feel in your hand? Is this button easy to reach? Is the flow from one screen to the next logical? The prototype answers questions that you can't even formulate in the abstract. Another is the use of a dual y-axis, plotting two different data series with two different scales on the same chart, which can be manipulated to make it look like two unrelated trends are moving together or diverging dramatically. The chart is essentially a pre-processor for our brain, organizing information in a way that our visual system can digest efficiently. This shift has fundamentally altered the materials, processes, and outputs of design. This was the part I once would have called restrictive, but now I saw it as an act of protection. For most of human existence, design was synonymous with craft.
