That paper object was a universe unto itself, a curated paradise with a distinct beginning, middle, and end. It returns zero results for a reasonable query, it surfaces completely irrelevant products, it feels like arguing with a stubborn and unintelligent machine. The only tools available were visual and textual. For showing how the composition of a whole has changed over time—for example, the market share of different music formats from vinyl to streaming—a standard stacked bar chart can work, but a streamgraph, with its flowing, organic shapes, can often tell the story in a more beautiful and compelling way. The information presented here is accurate at the time of printing, but as we are constantly working to improve our vehicles through continuous development, we reserve the right to change specifications, design, or equipment at any time without notice or obligation. Is it a threat to our jobs? A crutch for uninspired designers? Or is it a new kind of collaborative partner? I've been experimenting with them, using them not to generate final designs, but as brainstorming partners.
