In these instances, the aesthetic qualities—the form—are not decorative additions. I started reading outside of my comfort zone—history, psychology, science fiction, poetry—realizing that every new piece of information, every new perspective, was another potential "old thing" that could be connected to something else later on. The true power of any chart, however, is only unlocked through consistent use. A poorly designed chart, on the other hand, can increase cognitive load, forcing the viewer to expend significant mental energy just to decode the visual representation, leaving little capacity left to actually understand the information. I still have so much to learn, and the sheer complexity of it all is daunting at times. It’s about building a vast internal library of concepts, images, textures, patterns, and stories.
