To hold this sample is to feel the cool, confident optimism of the post-war era, a time when it seemed possible to redesign the entire world along more rational and beautiful lines. This single, complex graphic manages to plot six different variables on a two-dimensional surface: the size of the army, its geographical location on a map, the direction of its movement, the temperature on its brutal winter retreat, and the passage of time. The very shape of the placeholders was a gentle guide, a hint from the original template designer about the intended nature of the content. There is also the cost of the user's time—the time spent searching for the right printable, sifting through countless options of varying quality, and the time spent on the printing and preparation process itself. That disastrous project was the perfect, humbling preamble to our third-year branding module, where our main assignment was to develop a complete brand identity for a fictional company and, to my initial dread, compile it all into a comprehensive design manual. It can take a cold, intimidating spreadsheet and transform it into a moment of insight, a compelling story, or even a piece of art that reveals the hidden humanity in the numbers.
